In yet another anticipated announcement, Samsung revealed it’s latest gadget offering for the gadget-hungry market – the Samsung Galaxy S5 – in the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, Spain.
Introduced by David Park, Samsung President & CEO JK Shin gave the opening remarks. Shortly after, the next Galaxy – Samsung Galaxy S5 – was revealed.
Samsung Galaxy S5 Features
Among the interesting highlights pointed out in the unpacked event included the clear 5.1 FULL HD SuperAMOLED screen with as much as 500cd/m, aside from its Adaptive Display. On the other hand, it can dim to as low as 2cd/m. On regular use, its 2800mah battery can provide upto 10 hours of web surfing using LTE or upto 12 hrs video playback.
“That’s a lot of cat videos,” Jean Daniel Ayme quipped.
Add to that the Ultra Power Saving Mode that protects battery life by turning the display to black while minimizing battery consumption of apps that are running on the Galaxy S5.
Of particular interest with the camera are the Fast AF, HDR (Richtone), and Selective Focus features.
The first cuts the auto-focus response time from the usual 1 second to only 0.3 second fast AF; the fastest ever for a smartphone to date. The prescision and speed was made possible courtesy of the PDAF Module. This feature enables the smartphone to capture moving objects with ease like in sports photography.
HDR, or High Dynamic Range makes photos more realistic by getting you as close to reality; as they say, ‘what you see is what you get‘.
The last one works like a DSLR where the Selective Focus can blur the background highlight your selected subject, and vice cersa.
The presenter summarized it appropriately by saying “It’s not enough to be beautiful, you got to be fast.”
A slew of other features include:

I have to say all these features are awesome specially the fast AF and Selective Focus. I just hoped they also improved the the 2MP front camera for my selfies. 🙂 At the very least, they would have moved it closer to the rear camera’s 16MP even for just a bit.
Social media had mixed reactions as well. While some liked the new development, other criticized that there were no really major changes to the Galaxy S5 as some have expected.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is available in metallic blue, white, charcoal black, & copper gold. I want it gold this time as this produces a good effect on the new back cover texture and pattern.
