In an effort to give netizens more access to fast and reliable hotspots in high-traffic locations around the country, the Department of Information and Communications Technology officially launched today – June 12, Philippine Independence Day – recently installed WiFi hotspots in key MRT Stations and areas along Metro Manila’s busiest highway – EDSA.
The EDSA WIFI Project aims to provide high-speed internet connectivity throughout the 24-kilometer stretch of EDSA. The increased access points is intended to give more freedom of information to the public by way of the Internet and was done in partnership with telcos Smart Communications and Globe Telecoms.
“[This is a] gift to the people of this free nation. We work to give Filipinos access to the information and technology that they need in their daily lives. EDSA Wifi will benefit the hundreds of thousands of ommuters along EDSA daily,” shares DICT Secretary Rodolfo Salalima.
NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba and Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, gave the opening remarks and the keynote speech, respectively. Telco officials from both Smart Communications and Globe Telecoms were also present at the launch.
They also reiterated that the MRT Free Wifi and EDSA Free Wifi are primarily for pedestrians and commuters. Drivers are discouraged to browse the Internet on their mobile phones in the duration of driving.
