We have been using the latest smartphone model (ZB631KL) from the Asus Zenfone Max series – the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 – for weeks now.
Known for its high capacity batteries, the M2 model is obviously posed as the successor of the ZenFone Max Pro M1 launched earlier last year (in case the model number does not make it too obvious). 🙂 Hence, similar features such as the 5000mAh Battery, Bokeh Cameras, Triple Card Slots (2X SIM, 1X MicroSD), Biometric Security Features, 5-magnet Speaker, and simple stock Android, among others, is found again in this Zenfone Max Pro M2.
What’s New with the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2
Now for the new stuff, in summary, the ZenFone Max Pro M2 packs the following:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC (from Snapdragon 636 in M1)
- Larger 6.3-inch IPS Full HD+ Display (with 2280 x 1080 FHD+ resolution + 450nits brightness)
- Gorilla Glass 6 (from Gorilla Glass 5 in M1 )
- New AI Camera with better Low Light Capability (using Sony IMX486 sensor)
- Enhanced Camera Interface (button access to commonly used features) with Pro mode
- Bokeh control with a slider
- Glossy 3D-curved Back Panel (“wave” finish)
Battery & Display
In our 3-weeks use, we’ve proven true that the long battery life can indeed last upto almost 3 days with regular use of call, sms, the cameras (without flash), and regular 8-hour internet browsing per day for 3 days. As per the stand-by time, it is said to last up to 35 days
For the physical features, the thin bezel “all-screen” display and slim chassis with “3D” rounded edges makes it look like a 5.5-inch phone good for the handy gaming experience; made possible mainly by the ultra-dense battery technology.
This makes the ZenFone Max Pro M2 the lightest 5000mAh smartphone.
Display-wise, this is complemented by the “hide-able” onscreen buttons that is both scratch resistant and drop-friendly.
All these features are perfect for mobile gaming and video or movie-viewing on the go. Many movies now come in a 21:9 widescreen format, making the ultra-wide format of the ZenFone Max Pro’s display better than the usual Full HD (1920 x 1080) displays.
Add to that the Android 8 split screen multi-tasking view!

Security & More
The Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 comes with impressive technology innovations on the consumer security level in terms of unlocking. These are the Pattern or pin lock, Fingerprint scanner (rear sensor), and Face Unlock.
Moreover, we’ve abused both the front and back cameras for review purposes and Gadget Gambit is happy with the results.
The 12MP main camera is equipped with a Sony IMX486 Sensor with LED flash and another 5MP depth sensing camera for the background blurring bokeh effect.
On the other hand, the 13MP selfie camera offers a F2.0 aperture with softlight led flash.
Photography enthusiasts would love the AI Scene Detection feature as well (currently 13 and growing) for sensing scenes or subjects being shot for best results.
Shooting Modes include the Auto mode, Pro Mode, Sports, and Night mode for low light situations. Filters include mono, sepia, negative, and posterized, among others. Beautification features and Pro Mode (manual settings) for the experts are also available.
